The training session was organized in collaboration with the UNESCO Beirut Office, with the participation of 19 teachers from 4 associated schools in North Lebanon. Participants were introduced, as their colleagues in the previous session conducted in May 2007, to the “World Heritage in Young Hands” kit and were trained to put what they learned into applied exercises that might raise their students’ awareness regarding the World Heritage and the importance of having it preserved.
Under the patronage and in the presence of the Minister of Education and Higher Education, Dr. Khaled Kabbani, the Lebanese National Commission and the UNESCO Regional Office- Beirut co-organized the training session, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of education and some members of the Lebanese National Commission and directors as well as coordinators of the associated schools. 27 teachers from 21 associated schools were introduced to the World Heritage in Young Hands Kit, and to its usage. The objective is to sensitize their students with regards to the importance of the preservation of the local, national and world heritage. The participants made a study visit to Byblos site registered in the world heritage list.
Under the patronage and in the presence of the deputy Mrs. Bahia Hariri, president of the parliamentarian committee of education, the Lebanese National Commission and the UNESCO Regional Office- Beirut co-organized a ceremony on the occasion having as a slogan “Education as one of the human rights, join for the human rights now”. Representatives of Ministers of Education and Higher Education, Culture, Social Affairs and Officials, educators, directors as well as coordinators and teachers of associated schools attended the ceremony. Around 1000 students belonging to associated schools from different regions composed a human chain, through holding hands and singing the song composed for this occasion by Mr. Paul Abi-Rached entitled “We claim education for all”. At the closing of the ceremony, balloons were let go, followed by moment of silence dedicated to the spirit of the child student Ziad Ghandour who was assassinated during the EFA week. His classmates at Wata Mossaitbeh mixed public school participated in the event.
Under the patronage of the Lebanese National Commission, the Montana International College organized a national contest on best writing expression in English and French on “Global Warming”. An award ceremony was organized to honor the winners at the school. The Vice-President of the Lebanese National Commission, Prof. Dr. Khalil Karam gave a speech on the occasion on behalf of the Lebanese National Commission with the presence of the ASPnet National Coordinator, directors, coordinators as well as teachers and students of ASPnet. The winners are students from the following schools: -1st prize: Lycée d’Orient; 2nd prize: Omar Ben Al-Khattab College- Makassed Islamic Caritative Association; 3rd prize: Montana International College. The winners received the following awards: certificates signed by the president of the school and by the Secretary General of the Lebanese National Commission; books and airplane tickets for traveling.
Under the patronage of the Lebanese National Commission, the UNESCOIAD project was launched by the Sagesse High School. 50 swimmers from 9 associated schools joined a 200m competition at the Sportive Club of College Notre Dame de Jamhour. The participating schools were: College Notre Dame de Jamhour; Deutsche-Schule - Jounieh; Institut Moderne du Liban- Fanar; International College-Beirut; Montana International College; Rawdat Al-Fayhaa School-Tripoli; Sagesse High School- Ain Saade; Zahrat El-Ihsan; St.Georges- Hadath. The winners received medals-golden, silver and bronze from Ms. Christiane Jeitani - the ASPnet National Coordinator representing the Secretary General of the Lebanese National Commission, Mrs. Salwa Saniora Baassiri, whereas the Vice-President of the AUST University, Dr. Riad Sakr offered the financial prizes being the sponsor of the event.
