On the occasion of the World Poetry Day and its 65th anniversary, the Lebanese National Commission held a musical and poetic ceremony entitled “Crossing”, under the patronage of Prime Minister Mr. Najib Mikati represented by the Minister of Education Dr. Hassan Diab, and in the presence of Mr. Faraj Kerbaj representing President Amine Gemayel; Brigadier William Abdel Aal, representative for the Minister Salim Jreissati; former minister Mohammad Youssef Baydoun; Head of the Press Syndicate Union Mr. Mohammad Baalbaki; Colonel Joseph Badawi, representative for the Armed Force Commander General Jean Kahwaji; Commander Ziad Mrad, representative for the Director General of Internal Security Forces Major General Ashraf Rifi; Commander Bassam Farah, representative for the Director General of the General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim; Brigadier of the Internal Security Forces Antoine Boustany; with artist Georgette Gebara as the guest of honor.
Also present were the President of the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO Dr. Henri Awit, the Secretary General Dr. Zahida Darwiche Jabbour, and members Dr. Claudia Abi Nader, Mrs. Elham Komaty and Dr. Amal Habib, as well as a number of poets, intellectuals and artists.
The ceremony began with the national anthem, after which, Jihad Al-Andary read selections of poems by Lebanese and Arab poets: Elie Daher, Jawdat Fakhreddine, Souad Al-Sabbah, Bouland Al-Haidari, Awlad Ahmad, Shawki Bzeih, Nizar Qabbani, Ghassan Matar, Georges Mghames, Bassima Batouli, Badr Shakir Al-Sayyab, Onsi El-Hage, Amin Nakhleh, Said Akl, Akl Awit, Mohammad Ali Chamseddine, Mahmoud Darwish et Samih Al-Qasim, with the ISF classical orchestra conducted by Major Antoine Tohme.
Exhibition “Le français par les jeux” on the occasion of the International Day of the Francophonie (21/03/2013, Presidency of the Lebanese University - Museum)
On the occasion of the International Day of Francophonie, the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at the Lebanese University organized in collaboration with the Lebanese National Commission, an exhibition entitled "Le français par les jeux".
In her speech, Dr. Wafa Berry, Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at the Lebanese University, explained that this exhibition, which the Faculty is proud to launch, was conducted in the framework of the Laboratory DeCo, of the Master of Professional Communication in French Language, and reflects the strategy adopted by the Faculty that aims at experimenting with new ways of teaching French. From an exclusively literary approach, the French language has expanded its areas of study, and is also taught in the faculty, through the language of communication in specific professional contexts, through cultural meditation, translation, computer and e-learning, etc... Dr. Berry also mentioned that these games will be converted into digital games as a further step.
Dr. Zahida Darwish Jabbour, Secretary General of the Lebanese National Commission, noted that if English is nowadays the language of technological inventions, given its common use in the business world, and if Arabic is the language of our identity bearing a culture deeply rooted in history, French is the language whose quality remains essential since the Renaissance, spreading a humanist thought that the world is in need of today. She also stressed the importance of teaching literature to enrich the mind and convey the culture of the other.
Dr. Faten Kobrosli, project coordinator, described the methodology of the project, and highly commended the efforts of her students.
In conclusion, a documentary presented the various phases of preparation, with testimonies of all the students who contributed to the realization of the exhibition.
Seminar "Youth Language, Language of Youth" (Presidency of the Lebanese University - Museum, 21/02/2013)
On the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, the Lebanese National Commission, in cooperation with the Lebanese University, organized a seminar on "Youth Language, Language of Youth", with the participation of Dr. Nader Siraj (Lebanon), Dr. Najwa Al-Hawsani (UAE), Dr. Khaled Al-Ghamri (Egypt) and Dr. Riad Kassem (Lebanon), and a large number of professors, university students and intellectuals.
The seminar, which was opened by the President of the Lebanese National Commission Dr. Henri Awit and moderated by the Dean of the Faculty of Letters and Human Sciences at the Lebanese University Dr. Wafaa Berry, focused on youth and contemporary language, the Arabic language in universities and in the modern means of communication, and its ability to cope with the changing times. The seminar was concluded by the presentation of a documentary on "Youth and Arabic language" by director Bahij Hojeij.
On the occasion of World Philosophy Day, the Lebanese National Commission organized a seminar on “Philosophy and Justice” moderated by Dr. Ahmad El-Amine, with the participation of Dr. Mohammad Chayya, Mr. Motaa Safadi, Dr. Mouchir Aoun, and attended by a large number of professors, university students and intellectuals.
Meeting “Intergenerational Dialogue for the Restoration of Peace” (Cultural Association – Tripoli, 21/09/2012)
On the occasion of the International Peace Day, the Lebanese National Commission and the Royal Academy of Science International Trust – RASIT organized an interactive meeting under the title “Intergenerational Dialogue for the Restoration of Peace”, gathering a large number of civil society actors and young university students.
Deeming the preservation of the memory of place inseparable from the preservation of cultural identity and collective memory, the Lebanese National Commission organized a cultural encounter in Tebnine archeological site.
The opening session included interventions from Mr. Issam Hajj representing H.E. Minister of Culture Mr. Gaby Layoun, Mayor of Tebnine Mr. Nabil Fawaz, Secretary General Dr. Zahida Darwiche Jabbour and the Activity Coordinator Dr. Wafaa Berry.
Selected readings were presented from pioneer poets in Jabal Amel: Ibrahim Berry, Fakhreddine Fakhreddine, Zainab Fawaz, Abdul Hussein Abdallah, Abdel Raouf El-Amin, Ibrahim Charara.
Other poets such as Dr. Haitham El-Amin and Dr. Jawdat Fakhreddine also participated and read a selection of their poems, allowing a bridge of communication between the grandparents’ and the progeny’s generations in an atmosphere of words and the authenticity of belonging to a shining history in Jabal Amel.
