The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with the Department of Social Sciences at the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), organized a conference entitled “The involvement of women in the world”, given by Mrs. Carole Andre-Dessornes, Doctor in Sociology at the Catholic Institute of Paris, Associate Member of Cadis-EHESS and Geopolitics Consultant.
The conference was attended by the Secretary General, Prof. Zahida Darwiche Jabbour, the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities Prof. Hoda Nehme, the Head of the Department of Social Sciences, Dr. Mirna Abboud Mzawak, and representatives of non-governmental institutions and civil society organizations, as well as university professors and students, and aimed at highlighting the role of women, with the participation of men, in building a social project that respects human dignity and active citizenship.
Under the patronage of H.E. Minister of Culture Mr. Raymond Araygi, and on the occasion of the World Arabic Language Day, the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO organized in cooperation with Beirut City Lions Club a seminar on “The Arabic Language: Challenges in the Modern World”, with the participation of linguistics, academics specialized in Arabic language and its programs in schools and universities.
The opening session included speeches from the President of Beirut City Lions Club Mr. Wajih Akkari, the Secretary General of the Lebanese National Commission Dr. Zahida Darwiche Jabbour, Lions Governor of the Region Mourched Hajj Chahine, and the Director General of the Ministry of Culture, Mr. Fayssal Taleb, representing the Minister.
Following the opening statements, Mr. Rachid Jalekh moderated the seminar, while Dr. Bilal El-Hadi discussed the status of Arabic Language in the cyberspace, and Dr, Haitham Al-Nahi discussed translation from and into Arabic. Mr. Hanna Abou Habib and Dr. Rafif Sidawi both presented respectively initiatives undertaken by the Ministry of Culture and the Arab Thought Foundation.
Under the patronage of His Beatitude Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut organized in cooperation with the Lebanese National Commission a seminar for the adoption of the Action Plan for the World Heritage Site of Qadisha Valley, in the presence of the Minister of Culture Mr. Raymond Araygi, MPs Mrs. Setrida Geagea and Mr. Elie Keyrouz, as well as mayors and senior officals from Becharré and Zgharta municipalities.
The seminar represented a main platform during which all relevant stakeholders discussed the key issues raised in the UNESCO Action Plan to manage the World Heritage site of Qadisha Valley.
Following the opening statements, technical experts from UNESCO, the Ministry of Culture, and from the Valley, made a series of presentations explaining the newly endorsed management plan, as well as the valley features, including the different roads and entrances; Existing infrastructure; Heritage inventory; Natural disasters management plan; and organizing the entrance to the valley.
