Call for applications: Ethics Teacher Training Course

The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is pleased to announce that the UNESCO Office in ‎Beirut is holding an Ethics Teacher Training Course (ETTC) from November 30 to December 3, 2016 as ‎part of UNESCO’s multifaceted capacity-building strategy.‎

This training course is organized in coordination with the Lebanese National Consultative Committee for ‎Ethics (LNCCE), and aims to: ‎
‎- Introduce the participants to the means and resources of teaching ethics; ‎
‎- Teach the participants the methodologies and methods of teaching ethics; and ‎
‎- Assess and provide feedback on the participants’ demonstrations of teaching skills under the guidance ‎of experienced teachers. ‎

ETTC is conducted by a team of international experts with extensive experience in ethics education and ‎offers a unique opportunity for participants from Lebanon and from other countries in the region to ‎enhance their teaching capacities in ethics. ‎

ALECSO Arab Youth Award 2016

The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is calling for nominations for the 2016 ALECSO Arab Youth Award, on the theme Youth Empowerment: Opportunities and Challenges.

Candidates must be of Arab nationality, not more than 35 years of age, and having conducted research or project in an Arab country.

Deadline for nominations is set to September 30, 2016.

Ibn Khaldoun-Senghor Translation Award 2016

The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is calling for nominations for the 2016 Ibn Khaldoun-Léopold Sédar Senghor Translation Award in Humanities, which aims at promoting cultural and linguistic diversity as well as encouraging literary exchanges between the Arab and the Francophone worlds.
The Award will exceptionally reward this year translations from Arabic to French, and French to Arabic in the field of humanities.

Deadline for nominations is set to June 25, 2016.

ALECSO 2016 Award for Creativity and Technical Innovation for young researchers in the Arab World

The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is calling for nominations for ALECSO Award for creativity and technical innovation for young researchers in the Arab World, aimed at promoting cultural scientific research, encouraging young researchers, creators and innovators, as well as helping creators invest in research and innovation and transform them into programs and economic projects.
Candidates must be of Arab nationality, not more than 35 years of age, and having conducted research or project in an Arab country.

UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development 2016

The Lebanese National Commission is pleased to announce that the call for 2015 nominations is open for the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which honors outstanding efforts of individuals, institutions, organizations engaged in ESD activities. The Prize consists of three annual awards of $50,000 each.

Nominations should be submitted by the governments of Member States or non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO. They should focus on a specific project or programme of the nominee.

The three Prize winners will be selected by the Director-General of UNESCO on the basis of recommendations made by an international independent jury consisting of five experts. The project/programme of the nominee will be assessed by the jury on the basis of the following criteria:

(a) Transformation: The project/programme practices ESD as transformative education in support of sustainable development.
The nominated project/programme should enable learners to bring about changes for a more just, peaceful and sustainable world. This can mean, for example, taking action against climate change, changing one’s consumption patterns, developing social entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods, or supporting those struggling against poverty.

(b) Integration: The project/programme addresses the three dimensions of sustainable development (society, economy, environment) in an integrated way.
The nominated project/programme should address the three dimensions (society, economy, environment) and help learners understand the interdependence between them and act accordingly.

(c) Innovation: The project/programme demonstrates an innovative approach to ESD.
The nominated project/programme should demonstrate an innovative approach to ESD, be it in the themes it covers, the methodology it employs, or the way the learning environment is designed. Reaching out to sectors beyond education and working with new partners can also be a sign of innovation.

In addition to these three criteria, the project/programme should:
- have a high impact relative to the invested resources,
- be replicable and scalable,
- should contribute to one or more of the five Priority Action Areas of the Global Action Plan (Advancing policy; Integrating sustainability practices into education and training environments (whole-institution approaches); Increasing the capacity of educators and trainers; Empowering and mobilizing youth; Encouraging local communities and municipal authorities to develop community-based ESD programmes).
